Description

How does a SVG work?

An SVG continuously monitors the electrical network:

  • When the load consumes inductive reactive power, the SVG supplies capacitive reactive power.
  • When excess capacitive reactive power exists, the SVG absorbs it.
  • When the system is balanced, it maintains minimal compensation.

Its controller uses high-speed semiconductor switches—typically IGBTs—to create a controllable current that offsets unwanted reactive current.

Power factor correction
Corrects power factor by injecting a forward or reverse current to counter act reactive power in the system. This helps improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs
Harmonic distortion
Eliminate harmonic distortion by detecting harmonic current and injecting acorresponding current in the opposite direction. This helps improve power quality and protect equipment from damage.
Voltage unbalance
SVG can balance currents and reduce voltage unbalance caused by uneven loads. However, it may not fully correct unbalance originating from upstream supply faults or severely unequal network.
Main benefits

  • Fast, dynamic reactive-power compensation
  • Improved power factor
  • Reduced voltage fluctuations and flicker
  • Lower current and transmission losses
  • Harmonic filtering capability
  • Independent compensation across three phases
  • Better performance than capacitor banks under changing loads
Compared with capacitor banks

Technical

Specification

An active harmonic filter has a measurement system that "listens" for noise in the power system and generates a compensating current to cancel out that which is less than ideal. It uses active technology to reduce unwanted harmonic distortion, correct power factor and improve the voltage regulation and unbalance of the power grid.
