Description

How does an AHF work?

An active harmonic filter has a measurement system that "listens" for noise in the power system and generates a compensating current to cancel out that which is less than ideal. It uses active technology to reduce unwanted harmonic distortion, correct power factor and improve the voltage regulation and unbalance of the power grid.

Main Compensation Modes

An active harmonic filter has a measurement system that "listens" for noise in the power system and generates a compensating current to cancel out that which is less than ideal. It uses active technology to reduce unwanted harmonic distortion, correct power factor and improve the voltage regulation and unbalance of the power grid.

Power factor correction
Corrects power factor by injecting a forward or reverse current to counter act reactive power in the system. This helps improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs
Harmonic distortion
Eliminate harmonic distortion by detecting harmonic current and injecting acorresponding current in the opposite direction. This helps improve power quality and protect equipment from damage.
Voltage unbalance
AHF can balance currents and reduce voltage unbalance caused by uneven loads. However, it may not fully correct unbalance originating from upstream supply faults or severely unequal network.

Main functions

  • Harmonic-current reduction
  • Reactive-power compensation
  • Power-factor improvement
  • Three-phase load balancing
  • Neutral-current reduction
  • Dynamic compensation for changing loads
Advantages

Compared with passive harmonic filters, an AHF offers:

  • Millisecond-level response
  • Dynamic and precise compensation
  • Compensation of multiple harmonic orders
  • Lower resonance risk
  • Adaptability to changing loads
  • Selectable compensation priorities
  • Easy parallel capacity expansion
